Third parties, such as parents and friends, are generally permitted to make payments to the accounts of clients unless the client rejects the offer of payment. However, third parties must recognize that they are not entitled to participate in the case or direct the client’s filings or positions in the case simply because they assisted the client in paying the attorney. Ethical rules require that only the client can be in control of the case in that way except in extraordinary circumstances.
